With the price of carbon-based fuels on the rise, the power companies that rely on fuels such as coal and oil to generate the bulk of their electricity have been forced to raise their rates; subsequently, homeowners are now opting for solar power to satisfy their electricity needs. Photovoltaic systems are popular with homeowners because the energy is free and recent technological advances have reduced the initial cost of these systems.

Batteries require a steady charge.

Due to the intermittent nature of solar energy, it is not practical to connect appliances directly to a photovoltaic panel. Instead, the power absorbed by the panels during hours of sunshine charges batteries, where it is stored for use as needed. The output of photovoltaic panels depends on certain variables such as the location of the solar panels, the time of day, and the season. These factors all affect the angle of incidence of the sunlight striking the photovoltaic cells and consequently, the temperature of the cells. These dynamic conditions that cause fluctuations in the output power of the panels are not conducive to good battery health. As a general rule, batteries like to be charged at a current rate that is about 20% of their Amp-hour rating. For instance, a 10 Ampere charge would be ideal for a 50 Amp-hour battery. Since overcharging batteries can cause them to quickly fail, a solar charge controller is necessary in order to insure the proper charge current is maintained.

What is a solar charge controller and how does it work?

A solar charge controller is an electronic circuit that adjusts the output voltage and current of solar panels to match the needs of the batteries being charged. In order to charge a battery, your charger -- or in this case your solar panel -- must be at a higher potential than the battery being charged. In other words, the voltage of the panel must be greater than the opposing voltage of the battery under charge, in order to produce a positive current flow into the battery. But how much more should it be? The current flow can be calculated using Ohm's law: E=I*R; where E is the voltage in expressed in volts, I is the current in Amperes, and R is equal to the resistance measured in ohm's. The effective voltage in this circuit is the output voltage of the solar panel minus the opposing voltage of the battery. We can determine the difference in voltage necessary to cause our desired current flow by plugging our known values into the equation. Assuming a 12 volt battery with a 50 Amp-hour capacity, our target charge rate should be about 10 Amps. There is no resistor in this circuit except for the internal impedance of the battery, which is a fraction of an ohm. In this case we will approximate it to be 0.2 ohms. Using Ohm's law we multiply 10 Amps by 0.2 ohms and we get 2 volts as a result. This means that our solar panel must be 2 volts higher than our battery voltage to maintain our target charge rate. This example is meant to show that the rated output voltage of your solar panel must be greater than the battery being charged for your solar charge controller to work. As discussed earlier, the actual values are dynamic and thus the need for a charge controller. There are some very sophisticated solar charge controllers available today, which use maximum power point tracking, or MPPT, allowing them to adapt to different battery and panel combinations such as 24v, 36v, 48v, etc. These controllers use DC-DC converters to match the voltage and use digital circuitry to measure actual parameters many times a second to adjust the output current accordingly.

The proper charge controller is necessary.

As you can see, a solar charge controller is an absolutely essential component of any photovoltaic system. Although it is true that a simple functional charge circuit can be built with a few parts obtained from your local electronics part store, this option is not recommended for the average person. With so many variables associated with solar power, the use of a solar charge controller that has the ability to track all the pertinent parameters and provide the optimum charge for your batteries is recommended instead. The use of a quality solar charge controller will ensure that you enjoy the maximum life from your batteries and the most from your photovoltaic system.

Hydrogen fuel powered cars were thought to be the preserve of large automobile companies, but things are changing. It may appear fanciful to expect to be able to convert your car from gas to water yourself but that is, in fact, a reality nowadays. There are now a number of manuals and kits available at little initial cost, for example, the system created by HydroPower.

Once the vehicle has been converted to run on water, you can rest content that you are benefiting the environment whilst paying a fraction of your previous fuel bills. Many people have been skeptical about whether a water fueled conversion system actually works.

So, let's take a look at the mechanics of such a system. A standard vehicle engine is converted to operate entirely on hydrogen and oxygen, generated by the electrolysis of water. No petroleum derived fuel or external electrical production unit is employed, or needed in any way. Water is the single by-product of the combustion of hydrogen and oxygen in the vehicle's engine. This water is then released through the exhaust system; no more nasty carbon monoxide emissions, just pure water. One of the best systems on the market comes from HydoPower.

All that's required for such a system is a little know-how, a few cheap tools and regular access to water; not a problem for most householders. There are also claims that the combustion system will also remove pollution from the air intake. It doesn't get much greener than that.

So what is water electrolysis and how does it actually work? Well, water electrolysis is simply the breaking down of water into its basic hydrogen and oxygen atoms by passing an electrical current through it. It really is as straightforward as that, although different methods have different efficiency levels. It is not even necessary to introduce an electrolyte like acid to the water to assist electrical conductivity. Normal water from the tap is all that's needed.

Until recently, the problem with a water electrolysis system was that the electrical energy required to perform the electrolysis exceeded the energy produced from the combustion of the oxygen and hydrogen. In other words, while it may have been a cleaner way of running a vehicle, it was thoroughly inefficient and wasteful of valuable energy.

But nowadays, systems such as the HydroStar employ modules which produce low voltage, specifically shaped electronic pulses of unique frequency and duration. (It may be of interest to some readers to note that this type of electronic technology, involving specific combinations of pulse frequency and duration, is now starting to be used in medicine to cure migraine, depression and other nervous disorders.) Modules used for vehicles keep overall power consumption low, low enough in fact for a vehicle's alternator to power it and leave enough surplus power for headlights and other electrical requirements.

It is difficult to establish the precise efficiency of such hydrogen fuel powered car systems. That will depend on factors such as how well the system is fitted, vehicle aerodynamics and weight, and how the vehicle is driven. It goes without saying that if the claims of up to 300 miles per gallon of water are even remotely accurate, efficiency ratings become redundant when you consider the price of a gallon of tap water. As far as the vehicle's performance is concerned, there should be little change as the same factory-fitted combustion engine is employed. Hydrogen fuel powered vehicles are by their nature safer than using gasoline.

A hydrogen fuel system is predominantly water with just a very small amount of hydrogen stored in the generator, while a gasoline system requires great amounts of combustible gas stored in a gas tank. A hydrogen fuel conversion system is also extremely versatile, requiring no alterations to a vehicle's existing gasoline powered system. Indeed, it is possible to switch back to the gas system any time a consumer may wish without any hassle. The choice is always in the hands of the owner. Say you encounter a problem with your hydrogen fuel system, you can simply switch back to gas while the hydrogen fuel problem is rectified.

Hydrogen fuel conversion systems can be used for more than just cars and trucks. Pretty much any home appliance using propane or natural gas is a candidate. The power supply will need to be converted to 12V DC, but that's very easy and inexpensive to do. (Or simply buy a cheap converter.) Think about a system that uses maybe one dollar a month in electricity powering appliances, stoves, furnaces, barbecue grills and the like right throughout your home.

Whether for automotive or home use, systems are fairly easy to assemble and install. Practical, step-by-step, hydrogen fuel system guides are readily available and cheap to purchase. No specialist tools are needed, although a little practice at electronic soldering may be advisable. But even that is relatively easy. An oscilloscope could be handy to test for efficiency and make adjustments, but it's certainly not a prerequisite.

If you do a lot of boondocking (no hookups while camping), then you know battery life is one of the most important things you must plan for, especially if you have a small battery bank. One great way to save a lot of power is to convert your existing incandescent lighting to LED lighting. LED stands for light emitting diode and provides light in a very different way than incandescent or fluorescent lighting sources. The biggest benefit for a boondocker is that LEDs require very little power to operate, so you won't have to be so conscious of switching off lights when you don't need them.

Just how much power can you save by going LED? In a typical travel trailer of say 27 feet with a super slide and a couple of bunk beds, you may have upwards of 20+ 12 watt incandescent bulbs. If you were to have all of these on at one time, you would be drawing around 20 amps of DC power. In a few hours, your single group 24 12-volt battery would be near dead. Even if you had two batteries, you wouldn't have much left to finish out a 2-day weekend without a battery recharge.

Now if you were to replace every interior incandescent bulb in this fictitious travel trailer with a 24 LED array warm color lamp, each drawing 190 mA, the total power consumption drops to 3.8 amps, over 5 times less power consumption. You wouldn't likely replace every incandescent bulb with a 24 LED array lamp but you could and if you did, you would be using 5 times less power, even if you had every light switched on.

There are several different routes you can take when doing the LED lighting mod: individual lights, such as a night or reading light, all or some interior lights, interior and exterior, storage compartments, etc. Much will depend on you budget and coolness factor you are trying to achieve. Replacing every incandescent bulb may just break your piggy bank, but doing a few can still help save some battery power.

Using a single LED for a night light, like in the bathroom, can be a real life saver. Well, it may not save your life but if you have to get up at 2am to go, you won't be blinded by the light and you should be able to go right back to sleep. A single LED connected through a SPST toggle switch mounted on the bathroom light fixture can provide just enough light to do your business.

Perhaps you just want to change a few lights out, like the lights over your bed, that are generally too bright to read by. There are direct replacement LED lamps that require no modification to the lighting fixture, other than swapping bulbs. For this type of LED lamp, use the "warm white" type. The cool white LEDs provide a bluish tint to the light color and may not appeal to your reading tastes. The warm white LEDs provide a yellowish light color very similar to that of a normal incandescent bulb.

If you plan on replacing the main lights inside the RV and have the type of fixtures that contain two bulbs with a switch in the middle, you can replace just one of the bulbs to reduce cost. This way you not only save money, but you also can still provide more light when you need it by switching on the second bulb. For this case, you should consider LEDs that have a wide beam angle, at least 120 degrees. This is the angle at which light is projected from the lamp. The wider the better if you're trying to light up a large area. These lamps are typically configured in a flat package with many LEDs, as many as 36 in some cases. They simply affix to the fixture with Velcro and plug in just like a standard bulb.

Another cool LED mod is to fit a LED rope light under your RVs countertop. Many upscale RVs have this feature as a standard option but there is no reason you can't have this classy look either. First, have someone help you test fit the rope for length, ensuring you have enough for the whole countertop. Then get some double-sided tape and stick it to the cabinet or under the countertop where you want the rope to run. If you have any left over rope, drill a hole the size of the rope's diameter and run the excess through the hole. Just stick the rope to the tape and press firmly. You can also add a switch to control the rope power as well.

A step light is also another easy LED mod that consumes very little power. If you forget to turn it off, you don't have to worry since it can be on for days and still be easy on your battery. You can use a courtesy light or an amber side marker light. These mount with a couple of screws to the underside of the stairwell. Power can be run to an inconspicuous switch inside. Some even have light sensors so they can automatically turn on when it gets dark and turn off in the morning.

Outside compartments are also a great candidate for LED lights. These can be powered through a pin switch so that when you open the compartment door, the light turns on, and then off when you close the door. The color of the LED light is not so important as is the placement of the light. Compartments are usually rectangular in shape, so try and place the LEDs near the corners of the compartment. This way, you will get the most light to all parts of the storage area.

Finally, upgrading your RVs exterior lighting can make for a very clean look as well as improve safety going to the road. LED porch, marker, clearance, backup, turn, and running lights are all candidates for LED replacement. Fortunately for you, many companies, like Bargman for example, now make direct replacement fixtures that include everything you need to perform the upgrade. Just be sure to budget enough since total exterior lighting replacement can run in to the hundreds of dollars.

Tip: LED brake/tail lamps may not work with some older thermal flasher units found on some vehicles. An LED brake/tail lamp will require an electronic flasher/blinker unit which is commonly available at your local auto parts store. Just ask for the electronic equivalent of your thermal flasher.

The 12v power supply is one of the most common types of power source for consumer electronics that need an external power supply. Logically then, if you have 240v mains voltage and you need a 12v power supply, a 240v 12v transformer (as they are sometimes called) is probably involved. If you specifically want the transformer, I would guess you are either actually looking for a lighting transformer, or you are someone who dabbles in electronics. This includes knowing what voltage it needs, how much current it draws (electrical power) and if there are special considerations about the polarity of the power input. Other things to consider before buying 240v 12v transformers include things like fuses. The device you want to power may be protected from overloading by means of an internal fuse. This can sometimes accessed from the back of the enclosure, but often you have to open it to see the fuse. Thankfully, most electronics manufacturers inform you of any fuses, either on a label on the device or in the user manual. Should no fuse be present (one usually is), you could get a 12v adapter with a built in fuse. A 240v to 12v dc transformer often includes a fuse in addition to the rectifying circuitry, and it is a good idea to have a fuse somewhere in the chain.

A luxury LED replacement bulb will use only 10 percent of the energy required by an incandescent bulb, and thus represents a significant decrease in power costs regardless that quickly return ones initial procurement investment.

Companies seeking to obtain LEEDS certification can also lower their watts per square foot calculation by replacing incandescent and Xenon festoon lamps with custom, luxury LEDs. These lamps snap easily into place and do not require a technician to install. Luxury LED replacement lamps offer a versatile and advantages strip lighting upgrade product with a key design feature unique to the advanced engineering of the lamp. LED bulbs are generally DC powered light sources that require direct current inverters to operate on AC wiring systems.
